Description & ecology

A selenium hyperaccumulator studied for the biochemistry of selenium tolerance and its role in plant defence against herbivores.

Provenance correction 2026-09-06: the previously stored 3,500 µg/g (attributed to 'Freeman et al. 2008') appears in no accessible source — Freeman et al. (2006, Plant Physiology 142:124–134, open access, read in full) contains no species-specific maximum for S. pinnata. The documented field figure is >4,000 µg/g Se (Pine Ridge, Fort Collins, Colorado), tabulated with attribution to Galeas et al. (2007, New Phytologist 173:517–525) by White (2016, Annals of Botany 117:217–235, Table 1, open access). Galeas et al. 2007 is paywalled and not yet read at source, so the record stays review-cited; the stored 4,000 is a lower bound on '>4,000'. Note also that van der Ent et al. (2023) measured 11,900 µg/g Se in young leaves under artificial glasshouse dosing — not comparable to a field maximum.
