Description & ecology

Leaf selenium up to 1,965 ± 271 mg/kg dry weight near mine tailings (Yuan et al. 2013, read at the open-access source), with more than 70% present as selenocystine (SeCys2). Corrected 2026-08-15 from an earlier '>90%', which is Yuan's figure for Se-methyl-selenocysteine in Stanleya pinnata / Astragalus bisulcatus, not the selenocystine fraction in this species.

Honest bound: the population-mean leaf Se was only ~380 mg/kg (the authors call it a 'secondary accumulator' on average), so hyperaccumulator status rests on the near-tailings maximum. Root Se (~4,414 mg/kg) is higher but is non-comparable tissue and is not used as the foliar maximum. The epithet is misspelled 'hupingshanesis' in the source; the accepted spelling is hupingshanensis.
