Description & ecology

VALUE AS STATED AT SOURCE (El Mehdawi et al. 2014, Physiol. Plant. 152:70–83, doi:10.1111/ppl.12149, abstract): 'Symphyotrichum ericoides and M. tanacetifolia accumulated Se up to 3000 and 1500 mg Se kg-1 DW, respectively'; 55% of its Se as C-Se-C compounds, the remainder inorganic.

CAUTION / PROVISIONAL: measured as a comparison Asteraceae in a Se-supplied greenhouse experiment; value (1500 µg g⁻¹, >1000) exceeds the hyperaccumulation threshold, but field hyperaccumulation was NOT independently established here. Treat as a strong facultative/secondary accumulator rather than an obligate hyperaccumulator until a field foliar maximum is confirmed.
