Description & ecology
The first South-American metallophyte with indicator-like Zn and Cd accumulation: shoot maxima of 5,300 µg/g Zn and 280 µg/g Cd in plants grown on site-contaminated soil (Villafort Carvalho et al. 2013, read in open-access full text; the same paper's text also reports Zn 'up to 5,318 µg/g').
Facultative and extremely metal-tolerant; Villafort Carvalho et al. (2015) showed that cadmium, but not zinc, is sequestered in vacuolar oxalate crystals.
