Description & ecology

Field-collected leaves (HNO₃–H₂O₂ digest, ICP) ranged 815–4,290 µg g⁻¹ Ni (mean 2,520 ± 1,490, N=5; Navarrete Gutiérrez et al. 2024, Ecological Research 39:879–893, doi:10.1111/1440-1703.12504): 'Foliar samples of O. veracruzense had a minimum Ni concentration of 815 mg kg−1 and a maximum of 4290 mg kg−1 (mean of 2520 mg kg−1)'.

Facultative: only 12% of 89 herbarium specimens exceeded the 1,000 µg g⁻¹ threshold.

Notable as a Ni hyperaccumulator from basaltic volcanic soils rather than ultramafic serpentinite.
