Description & ecology

Herbarium XRF foliar Ni maximum 18,700 µg g⁻¹ DW (range 450–18,700; Navarrete Gutiérrez et al. 2024, Ecol. Res. 39:879–893, doi:10.1111/1440-1703.12504).

Field-collected leaves from Chiapas reached 47,200 µg g⁻¹ Ni (mean 14,600 ± 16,800), but this single-site maximum is retained in notes only because it approaches the global foliar Ni record and awaits independent replication.

More than 90% of herbarium specimens exceeded the 1,000 µg g⁻¹ Ni threshold, interpreted by the authors as obligate hyperaccumulation.

Also reported as a Co hyperaccumulator (max 2,660 µg g⁻¹) — retained in notes only.
